Behind the Times in 2009

Here's how I know:

1. Still have Xanga.
2. Have online banking but also use a check register.
3. Pay bills with checks.
4. Bought Quick Books software months ago but haven't installed it because I'm not sure I need it.
5. AOL mailbox.
6. My cell phone is used only for making and receiving calls (it can't do much else anyway - I took the free out of date one a few years ago).
7. Still hanging on to being okay with all of this (except the embarrassing AOL) (I feel better when I get Juno email from a relative) (But this could just mean that I'm old enough to be proud of not moving ahead with "new-fangled" technology).

Are you behind the times? How will I know? Are you on Xanga?

Prayer for my Children

I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew
he moved my soul to seek him, seeking me;
it was not I that found, O Savior true;
no, I was found, was found of thee.
It was not I that found, O Savior true;
No, I was found, was found, of thee.

Thou didst reach forth thy hand and mine enfold;
I walked and sank not on the storm-vexed sea;
'Twas not so much that I on thee took hold,
as thou, dear Lord, took hold on me.
'Twas not so much that I on thee took hold,
as thou, dear Lord, took hold on me.

I find, I walk, I love; but, oh, the whole
of love is but my answer, Lord, to thee!
For thou wert long beforehand with my soul;
always, always thou lovedst me.
For thou wert long beforehand with my soul;
always, always thou lovedst me.

Brown County; Brown President

Pete and I took 5 days and traveled to Brown Country, Indiana.  We couldn't have asked for better weather, more glorious colors, or better company (each other, a visit to Ruth T., and a day spent with Megan).  Unless Chris could have been with us, that is.  We did usual vacation stuff, plus we tried and loved horseback riding.

Our trip included the election.  We saw a movie and went out for supper, but I still ruminated, worried, and was nervous.  It's no fun to lose, and lose I did.  But I'm getting over it, and I hope Obama and our country both do well.  The systems works better if we do not trash and persecute the person we did not support.  Lesson:  George W. Bush, the man who made plenty of mistakes but did not deserve to be blamed for everything that did or did not happen in the world for the past 8 years, including the weeds in your back yard.  Let's all, including me, get over ourselves.

The Presidents (backwards)

Sing to the tune of Yankee Doodle:

Obama [or McCain], Little Bush, Clinton, Bush,
Dear old Ronald Reagan,
Carter, Ford, Tricky Dick,
Lyndon Baines Johnson.

(Chorus)
Kennedy, Ike, and Truman,
Franklin Delano Roosevelt,
Hoover, Coolidge, Harding, Wilson,
William Taft and Teddy.

McKinley, Cleveland, Harrison,
Once more for Grover Cleveland,
Chester Arthur, Garfield, Hayes,
Ulysses Grant and Johnson.

(Chorus)
Abraham Lincoln (number sixteen),
Buchanan, Pierce and Fillmore.
Taylor, Polk and Tyler too,
William Henry Harrison.

Martin Van Buren, Andrew Jackson,
And John Quincy Adams,
James Monroe, James Madison,
and Thomas Jefferson.

(Chorus)
John Adams – we’re almost done
Singing about our Presidents.
Washington was number 1,
And that’s the White House Residents.

October Prayer

October Prayer, by Esther Popel (1896-1958)

Change me, oh God,
Into a tree in autumn
And let my dying
Be a blaze of glory!

Drape me in a
Crimson, leafy gown,
And deck my soul
In dancing flakes of gold!

And then when Death
Comes by, and with his hands
Strips off my rustling garment
Let me stand

Before him, proud and naked,
Unashamed, uncaring,
All the strength in me revealed
Against the sky!

Oh, God
Make me an autumn tree
If I must die!
